The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the La Dadekotopon Constituency has raised concerns over the demolition of structures at the La Pleasure Beach area in Accra.
The constituency said it was surprised by the exercise, insisting that its preliminary consultations indicated that the area was not part of any planned demolition by the Labadi Beach Hotel.
According to the NDC, neither the party nor local government authorities were informed before the exercise.
Speaking at a press conference, the Member of Parliament for La Dadekotopon, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, said the demolition resulted in the destruction of businesses and property belonging to individuals operating at the site.
“I want to say on authority that the party NDC is not aware of this and is not part of this. The Labadi Beach Hotel and SSNIT working with the National Security carried out this exercise,” she said.
The MP said affected persons should have been given prior notice to enable them to retrieve their belongings before the demolition.
She appealed to affected businesses and residents to engage with the constituency leadership as it works to establish the circumstances surrounding the exercise.
Ms Sowah said the constituency would convene a stakeholder meeting next week involving traditional authorities, the constituency, the Municipal Chief Executive and other relevant stakeholders to determine the way forward.
She further said the demolition was not part of any government-led anti-flooding exercise.
According to her, consultations with the anti-flooding team indicated that the Pleasure Beach area had not been identified as a flood-prone location under the exercise.
She assured affected persons that the constituency would continue engaging the relevant authorities and provide further information after the stakeholder meeting.
