New Patriotic Party (NPP) member Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has praised former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for his leadership qualities, describing him as a politician with the temperament, dignity and vision needed to lead Ghana through challenging times.
Mr Otchere-Darko made the remarks in a birthday tribute to Dr Bawumia, who turned 63 on Wednesday, October 7.
He said Dr Bawumia had demonstrated an ability to recognise opportunities where others might see obstacles, while also possessing the temperament required to take difficult decisions.
“You have the dignity to lead, the temperament to make difficult decisions and the vision to recognise opportunities where others see impossibilities,” he wrote.
Mr Otchere-Darko also highlighted the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI), saying Ghana would need leadership that understands technological change and can position the country’s young people to benefit from emerging opportunities.
“As AI reshapes our world, Ghana needs leadership that understands the future and can help our young people turn anxiety into ambition and ambition into opportunity and prosperity,” he stated.
Turning his attention to the 2028 presidential election, Mr Otchere-Darko said Dr Bawumia’s years of preparation and experience would give him a strong foundation for the contest.
He said whoever emerges as Dr Bawumia’s main challenger would face a candidate with “nearly two decades of preparation, experience and a demonstrated instinct for solving problems.”
Mr Otchere-Darko further noted that Dr Bawumia’s 63rd birthday came in the same week that the NPP formally recognised him with the title of Leader.
“Fittingly, the week you turn 63 is the week the NPP has formally bestowed upon you the title of Leader,” he said.
Reflecting on their relationship spanning nearly two decades, Mr Otchere-Darko described Dr Bawumia as a man of “remarkable character”, praising his loyalty, patriotism and humility.
He recalled meeting Dr Bawumia at his Kanda residence nearly 20 years ago, together with Ken and Joe, and said his impression of the former Vice-President had remained positive over the years.
“I have never seen you angry, heard you insult anyone or known you to be touched by scandal,” he wrote.
Mr Otchere-Darko concluded his tribute by wishing Dr Bawumia good health, strength and wisdom as he prepares for the political journey ahead.
