Three major teacher unions: the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Pre‑Tertiary Teachers’ Association of Ghana (PRETAG) have suspended their industrial strike following an agreement with government on new modalities to address outstanding concerns over promotions, salary adjustments, and allowances.
GNAT General Secretary, Thomas Musah, announced the suspension of the strike and urged teachers to return to the classroom.
“We want to announce that we have suspended the strike today. We want to call all our members to return to the classrooms,” he said.
The unions had embarked on the industrial action over unresolved issues relating to promotions, conditions of service, and deprived‑area allowances. Delays in the payment of promotion‑related arrears were among the key grievances raised.
On October 9, the Council of State invited representatives of the unions to a meeting to discuss the concerns, paving the way for the breakthrough agreement.
