The Communication Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Communication Director for the flagbearer of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has waded into the conversation surrounding the appointment of Madam Emelia Afi Agbenyo as the Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.
Mr. Aboagye argues that the appointment of Madam Emelia Agbanyo is an affront to the democracy of the country, noting that it is a sad day in Ghana’s democratic discourse that a politically exposed person is appointed to the highest office of the Electoral Commission.
Speaking on TV3 on Monday, October 12, shortly after the swearing-In ceremony of Madam Emelia Afi Agbanyo and Dr Joseph Kweku Asamoah, as deputy Commissioners of the Electoral Commission, Mr. Aboagye maintains that the government is deliberately turning democracy upside down.
President John Dramani Mahama, on Monday, October 12, 2026, swore in Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Joseph Kwaku Asamoah (Esq) as Deputy Commissioners of the Electoral Commission.
The appointments of the two as Deputy Commissioners of the EC follow the resignation of former Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of Corporate Affairs, Dr. Bossman Asare, whose resignation took effect on July 31, 2026, and the retirement of the EC’s former Deputy Chairperson in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey.
However, in his submission, Mr. Aboagye said, “Sometimes I don’t know which of the diseases the NDC and their leadership are suffering from; whether it is the ignorance or the arrogance of power. This Afi woman is the spokesperson for the NDC manifesto. This Afi woman is a member of the NDC campaign team. How can we be so low?”
“This is someone who can become a returning officer of the EC, and she is NDC. This is so low. They should continue to be in a bubble. This bubble we have seen before,” he averred.
