President John Dramani Mahama has announced a GH¢200 million allocation to reclaim 5,000 acres of land degraded by illegal mining, with the programme expected to begin in 2027.
Speaking at the Mining in Motion Conference on Monday, October 19, he said illegal mining had destroyed approximately 12,000 acres of land across the country, making reclamation a key part of efforts to restore affected areas.
“GH¢200 million has been allocated for the reclamation of 5,000 acres of land starting next year [2027],” he said.
President Mahama also disclosed that work was underway to reclaim 253 acres of land degraded in the Tano Nimri Forest under a contract awarded by the Ghana Gold Board to the Ghana Armed Forces.
“That work is ongoing,” he said.
