The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has restored power to Parliament house after disconnecting the legislative arm of government from the national grid on February 29.

The reconnection happened on March 1, after GHC10m out of the GHC23m debt owed the power distribution company was paid.

The ECG disconnected power supply to Parliament and Job 600, the office complex of the Members of Parliament in the forenoon.

TV3’s Parliamentary correspondent, Komla Klutse, reported Thursday, February 29, 2024, that lawmakers and staff who were using the elevator at the time got stuck as a result of the power cut.

The primary goal of ECG’s nationwide disconnection exercise is to recover outstanding debts from various customers, and in this case, Parliament House and Job 600 were targeted due to their substantial debt amount.

Staff of the ECG disconnection task force were spotted in the House last week which spurred speculations over a possible power cut due to the debt.
