The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) has extended its heartfelt congratulations to Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, following his decisive victory in the 2024 general elections.
In a statement issued by Ambassador Dr Muhammad Shahid Amin Khan, the World Chair of the IHRC, the organization commended Ghanaians for their confidence in Mahama’s leadership and praised the peaceful conduct of the elections.
“The people of Ghana showed full confidence in the wise leadership of my brother, H.E. John Mahama,” the statement read. “I, being the Chief of the International Human Rights Commission as an intergovernmental organization and on behalf of my Senior Deputy Chairman, His Excellency Ambassador Zein Abu, congratulate the President-elect and the people of Ghana on the smooth transition of governments. Democracy won today
The IHRC’s congratulatory message comes amid widespread acclaim for the peaceful and orderly nature of Ghana’s elections, which saw Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) secure 56.55% of the vote to defeat Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who garnered 41.61%. Voter turnout stood at 60%, a notable decline from the 78.89% recorded in 2020.
Mahama’s return to the presidency is seen as a significant political comeback after his defeat in 2016 to outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo. His campaign centred on addressing Ghana’s economic challenges, with promises to prioritize economic recovery, tackle youth unemployment, and restore confidence in governance.
