Eight men who participated in violent disturbances during the Ablekuma North re-run have been convicted and sentenced by the Accra Circuit Court.
Each was ordered to pay a fine of 500 penalty units (GH¢6,000) or, in default, serve 24 months in prison.
The convicts — Mohammed Abubakari, Tijani Mahmudu, Prince Dzakpasu, Anas Mohammed, Mohammed Hamda, Darko Otibu Samuel, Musah Muntari, and Ali Saeed (alias Bomba) — appeared before His Honour Isaac Addo on Friday, August 29, 2025. They all pleaded guilty to the charges leveled against them.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred at the Methodist Church Polling Station during the re-run. The victims included Hawa Mavis Koomson, former Minister of State and ex-MP for Awutu Senya East; Majeed Mohammed Saana, a trader; and Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei, Deputy Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Prosecutors told the court that while the victims were monitoring proceedings, the accused persons launched an unprovoked attack. Mrs. Koomson and Mr. Saana were assaulted first, after which the group turned on Mr. Kwei.
The eight were charged with conspiracy to commit assault and three counts of assault, contrary to Sections 23(1) and 84 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
The case, which began on Monday, August 26, was fast-tracked after all the accused admitted their roles in the violence. The trial concluded with their conviction and sentencing today.
