Titus Glover, the former Greater Accra Regional Minister and current Member of Parliament for Tema East, has condemned Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor’s decision to ask GRIDCo’s CEO, Ing. Mark Awuah Baah, to step aside. Glover called the move a “knee-jerk reaction.”
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Glover questioned the rationale behind the directive, particularly since investigations into the Akosombo substation fire are still underway. He argued that the CEO is due to retire in June and would soon be on leave anyway, asking why authorities can’t focus on solving the actual problem instead of making hasty personnel changes.
From a non-expert standpoint, Glover believes the fire appears to have been accidental. He stated that unless there is concrete evidence of sabotage, officials should avoid acting on rumors or speculation.
The fire caused significant damage to key infrastructure, leading to widespread blackouts and the shutdown of operations at the Akosombo Dam. While authorities continue to investigate the cause and extent of the damage, the Minister has defended his directive as necessary for a transparent and independent inquiry.
In a related move, the Ashanti Regional leadership of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has also been reshuffled to improve efficiency amid ongoing sector challenges. However, Glover argued that changing leaders alone won’t solve the underlying crisis. He called for a more thoughtful approach, questioning whether those being removed are truly responsible for the problems in the first place.
