The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed the Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Dr William Amankrah Appiah, and the Obuasi Municipal Director of Education, Kwamena Owusu-Nketiah, to step aside with immediate effect amid ongoing investigations into alleged sexual misconduct at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).
The directive, announced in a statement dated October 20, 2026, forms part of measures to ensure that investigations into allegations involving the school’s headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, proceed without interference or the perception of interference.
According to the GES, the two directors are required to hand over their offices and all state property in their possession to the Deputy Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Thomas Kwame Boateng.
The Service said the decision was intended to safeguard the integrity of the investigation as authorities continue to examine the allegations.
Meanwhile, Mr Abdulai remains interdicted, with the GES urging the public to disregard reports suggesting that he has been cleared.
The Service said the investigation was ongoing and called for calm, support and cooperation from the public as the process continues.
The development follows public concern over allegations of sexual misconduct at the school, prompting calls for accountability and stronger child protection measures in educational institutions.
The GES reiterated its commitment to ensuring a thorough investigation into the matter.
