The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has congratulated Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on his victory in the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primary, citing a strong affirmation of Ghana’s democratic identity and religious pluralism.

Dr Bawumia emerged victorious from a keenly contested primary on Saturday, January 31, 2026, defeating four other aspirants to secure the party’s ticket.

He commended the NPP for conducting a peaceful congress, urging party members to see it as an opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to internal democracy, constitutional order, and interfaith harmony.

In a statement issued on Monday, February 2, the Chief Imam also praised the other contestants for conceding in a spirit of unity and reconciliation, noting that their conduct reflected political maturity and respect for democratic norms.

He stressed that while approaches to internal party contests may differ, the shared objective of national progress must remain paramount.

Additionally, His Eminence lauded the Ghana Police Service and the Electoral Commission for what he described as transparency, accountability, and objectivity in the conduct of the primary, contributing to the credibility of the process.

“Democracy is a shared responsibility and a civic duty. And when we all play our roles effectively in pursuit of democratic prosperity, in the end, we will not remember the discomfort of our individual struggles, but the comfort of our collective success”, concludes His Eminence.
